Women Shaping Countries

Women’s leadership and political participation have been questioned throughout history. Until the late 19th century, women around the world were denied political participation and the right to vote. Beginning in the twentieth century, limited rights were achieved in some countries and equality slowly started evolving. Despite the challenges, a new dimension of political participation has arisen for women and many of the top global political mavericks are now women.
Trends in female political leadership include: advancing family-friendly legislation, promotion of children’s rights and an increased focus on social issues like education, health and nutrition. In this section, we explore some of the top female politicians and how they have had or are having a positive influence in their countries.
